About Peter Berry

Peter specialises in the strategic and tactical marketing leadership and delivery.

He has over 20 years’ experience of operating at a senior level in the education and government sectors and has been a key player in change and cultural management and development. Peter has led multi disciplinary teams from public and private sectors in successful economic development, education, tourism, and social regeneration marketing strategies.

From 2001 to 2006 Peter was Director of Marketing and Communications for the National College for School Leadership. Whilst there he built awareness, understanding, positive corporate reputation and brand recognition from zero base to an organisation described by the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit as “high impact” with “remarkable achievements” and “delivering a step change.” He devised and led NCSL's marketing strategy and team that was highly successful at corporate and product level, gaining a reputation for its innovation and quality across publications, PR, events, direct marketing, stakeholder management, and market research and consultation.

Prior to this Peter was Assistant Chief Executive dealing with Marketing and Corporate Affairs for City of York Council, between 1986 and 2001. He developed and led the first local authority marketing & communications team in Britain . He planned and implemented a series of strategies and initiatives for social, economic, commercial and corporate management campaigns . He led the public and lobbying campaigns for York to become a unitary council and the organisational change programme for five local authorities being merged into the unitary City of York Council.

He introduced a city-wide consultation strategy regarded nationally as a model of excellent practice. It incorporated over 20 methods of consultation techniques including citizens’ juries, customer research, stakeholder audits, resident and business opinion surveys, citizens’ panels and focus groups.  

His awards include those from the Local Government Chronicle heading the "Local Government PR team of the Year" and  a "Cream Award" from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).

Peter acted as adviser to the Improvement and Development Agency (IdEA),  the Local Government Association, Department for Education and Skills, and the Cabinet Office on best practice in consultation, communications and customer service issues. He was Chair of the Society of County and Unitary Public Relations Officers (now LGComms) and is a judge of the  CIPR Local Government Awards .

He has worked extensively in Slovakia and Hungary and with commercial and governmental organisations from around the world.
